"Then We bring you out as a child, then that you may reach your full strength," meaning: the age of puberty. "And among you is he who is taken in death"—there is an implied ellipsis here, meaning: he is taken in death before he reaches the most abject age of life. "And among you is he who is turned back to the most abject age of life," meaning: senility. "So that he may not know, after having had knowledge, anything," meaning: he becomes like a child who knows nothing.

Muhammad said: "Child" (tiflan) is in the sense of plural "children" (atfalan); as if the meaning is: each one of you emerges as a child.

His saying: "So that... not" (li-kay la) is in the sense of "until... not." "And you see the earth barren," Qatada said: meaning "dusty and crumbled."

Muhammad said: The reality of "barren" (hamidah) is dry. From this is the "extinction" (humud) of fire when it is extinguished and gone, and this is the meaning of Qatada's statement. "Then when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells," and there is a transposition here. It "swells" for the vegetation, meaning: it expands; and it "quivers" with vegetation when it grows. "And has produced every pair," meaning: of every type, "beautiful," meaning: pleasant.

Muhammad said: "Beautiful" (bahij) is in the sense of "gladdening" (bahij); the Arabs say: a woman with a gladdening appearance (dhat khalq bahij).

Surah al-Hajj from (verse 6 to verse 10).
