[And those who strive against Our verses] meaning: they deny them. [as opponents (mu‘ājizīn)] meaning: they think that they can render Us incapable and outrun Us so that We cannot catch them to punish them. This is the interpretation of al-Hasan. Mujahid's interpretation of (mu‘ājizīn) is: those who discourage people from faith.

Muhammad said: Yahya did not clarify the reading of Mujahid, and the reading according to his interpretation is (mu‘ajjizīn) with a shaddah [emphatic form].
