He found that the people had departed, and he was upon his camel when he came upon Aishah. He brought his camel and turned its back toward her until she mounted, then he led it until he arrived after the people had dismounted. Some people spoke about that and accused her falsely.
Yahya said: "It has reached me that Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, Hassan ibn Thabit, Mistah, and Hamnah bint Jahsh were the ones who spoke about that, and then it spread among the people. They alleged that when Allah revealed her innocence, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) flogged each of them with the prescribed punishment (hadd)." "Do not think it"—meaning Aishah and Safwan—"is bad for you"—meaning what was said about them—"rather, it is good for you. For every man among them"—meaning those who said what they said—"is what he has earned of sin"—according to the extent of what he spread. "And he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof"—meaning the one among them who initiated it—"for him is a great punishment." Some of them said: "He is the hypocrite Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul." "For him is a great punishment"—Hell.
Surah An-Nur (from verse 16 to verse 20).
