And "tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision" from that which is not lawful for them to gaze upon, "and guard their private parts" from that which is not lawful for them; this applies to both free women and slave women. "And not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof"; this applies to free women. The interpretation of Ibn Abbas and Qatada regarding "that which [necessarily] appears thereof" is that it refers to kohl and the ring. The interpretation of Ibn Mas'ud and al-Hasan is that it refers to the outer garments.
