"And We have certainly sent down to you distinct verses," meaning: the Qur'an. "And an example from those who have passed on before you," meaning: the reports of the previous nations.
Surah An-Nur from (verse 35 to verse 36).
﴿وَلَقَدْ أَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ آيَاتٍ مُبَيِّنَاتٍ﴾ يَعْنِي: الْقُرْآنَ ﴿وَمَثَلا مِنَ الَّذِينَ خلوا من قبلكُمْ﴾ يَعْنِي: أَخْبَار الْأُمَم السَّابِقَة.
