Qatada said: It was revealed over twenty-three years. "And they do not bring you an example"—meaning the polytheists in what they used to argue against him with—"but We bring you the truth and the best explanation," meaning clarification.
قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: نَزَلَ فِي ثَلَاثٍ وَعشْرين سنة ﴿وَلَا يأتوك بِمثل﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمُشْرِكِينَ فِيمَا كَانُوا يُحَاجُّونَهُ بِهِ ﴿إِلا جِئْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَأَحْسَنَ تَفْسِيرا﴾ تبيينا
