His saying, the Almighty: "[Those who avoid the major sins and indecencies] except for al-lamam." The interpretation of al-Hasan is: except for the small sin (al-lummah) which one commits.
Muhammad said: The meaning is that Allah, Exalted and Majestic, has promised forgiveness to those who avoid major sins, and He has also promised forgiveness to those who commit some of them, then repent from that and seek Allah's forgiveness. Al-ilmam (committing minor sins) in the language means: not to become deeply involved in the matter or to be persistent in it. This is the meaning of what al-Hasan inclined toward.
His saying: "[He is most knowing of you when He produced you] from the earth." Meaning: He created the embryos, as in the sense of the fetus in its mother's womb.
His saying: "[So do not claim yourselves to be pure]." Yahya narrated from Ibn Lahi'ah, from al-Harith ibn Yazid, from Thabit ibn al-Harith al-Ansari who said: "The Jews used to say when a young child died: 'This is a siddiq (truthful one).' This reached the Messenger of Allah, and he said: 'The Jews have lied. There is no soul that Allah has created in..."
