His saying: "Allah has heard the speech of the one who argues with you concerning her husband" [58:1]. The verse says: The divorce of the people of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) was Zihar (a man saying to his wife, 'You are to me like the back of my mother'). Khawla bint Tha'laba was the wife of Aws ibn Samit, and he performed Zihar against her. She went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he performed Zihar against me when I reached an advanced age.' Al-Kalbi said: 'And she said, "Is there anything that can reunite me and him, O Messenger of Allah?"' He said to her, 'I have not been commanded with anything regarding your case; return to your house, and if anything comes down to me, I will inform you.' When she left his presence, she raised her hands toward the heavens, supplicating to Allah. Then Allah revealed: "Allah has heard the speech of the one who argues with you concerning her husband" [58:1], until His saying: "And indeed, they speak an evil word and a lie" [58:2]—meaning a falsehood—when he says, 'You are to me like the back of my mother,' thereby prohibiting what Allah has made lawful. He said: "And indeed, Allah is Pardoning" [58:2] of them, "and Forgiving."
