what you have said.
{And they say to themselves: "Why"} - meaning, why not {does Allah not punish us for what we say} - regarding the "As-Sam" (death). That is: If he is a Prophet, then Allah will punish us for what we say. Allah said: {Hell is sufficient for them; they will [enter to] burn therein, and wretched is the destination}.

مَا قلتَ.
﴿وَيَقُولُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَوْلَا﴾ هلا ﴿يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ﴾ من السام أَي: إِن كَانَ نبيًّا فسيعذبنا اللَّه بِمَا نقُول. قَالَ اللَّه: ﴿حَسْبُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ يَصْلَوْنَهَا فبئس الْمصير﴾.
