He said: "Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, 'Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you.'" This means: we have denied your guardianship in religion.
"And between us and you there has appeared enmity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone - except for the saying of Abraham to his father, 'I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I have not power for you against Allah from anything.'" Meaning: that I can cause you to enter faith, nor can I forgive you. He says: There has been an excellent example for you in Abraham and those with him, except for the saying of Abraham to his father: "I will surely ask forgiveness for you"; so do not ask forgiveness for the polytheists.
وَقَالَ: ﴿قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآءُ مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ الله كفرنا بكم﴾ أَي: بولايتكم فِي الدّين.
﴿وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَاء أَبَدًا حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ إِلَا قَوْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لأَبِيهِ لأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَا أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِن شَيْءٍ﴾ أَن أُدْخِلَك فِي الْإِيمَان، وَلَا أَن أَغفر لَك. يَقُول: قد كَانَت لكم فِي إِبْرَاهِيم وَالَّذين مَعَه أُسْوَة حَسَنَة إِلَّا قَول إِبْرَاهِيم لِأَبِيهِ: لأَسْتَغْفِرَن لَك، فَلَا تستغفروا للْمُشْرِكين.
