"They have taken their oaths as a shield," meaning they used them as a covering so that they would not be killed nor their offspring captured. "And they averted [people] from the way of Allah," meaning with their hearts. "Evil" meaning: how wretched "is what they were doing."
﴿اتَّخذُوا أَيْمَانهم جنَّة﴾ اجتنُّوا بهَا، أَي: استتروا، حَتَّى لَا يقتلُوا وَلَا تُسْبَى ذَرَارِيهمْ ﴿فصدوا عَن سَبِيل الله﴾ يَعْنِي: بقلوبهم ﴿سَاءَ﴾ يَعْنِي: بئس ﴿مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ﴾
