"Your wealth and your children are but a trial," meaning: a test; to see how you act. "So fear Allah as much as you are able," meaning: to the extent of your capability. Qatada said: Allah revealed in Surah Al 'Imran: "O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared." And the right to be feared is that He is obeyed and not disobeyed, remembered and not forgotten, and thanked and not ungratefully denied. Then this verse abrogated it.
﴿أَنما أَمْوَالكُم وَأَوْلَادكُمْ فتْنَة﴾ أَي: اختبار؛ لينْظر كَيفَ تَعْمَلُونَ ﴿فَاتَّقُوا الله مَا اسْتَطَعْتُم﴾ مَا أطقتم. قَالَ قَتَادَة: أنزل الله فِي سُورَة آل عمرَان: ﴿يَا أَيهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاته﴾ وَحقّ تُقَاته: أَن يطاع فَلَا يُعْصَى، ويُذكر فَلَا ينسى، ويُشكر فَلَا يُكفر فنسختها هَذِه الْآيَة
