"Do you call upon Ba'l?" [He means: an idol that they should not have worshipped; it is called: al-Ba'l (the Master).
Al-Hasan's interpretation: The name of their idol was Ba'l. "And you leave the best of creators?"
﴿أَتَدعُونَ بعلا﴾ يُرِيد صنمًا مَا كَانَ لَهُم أَن يعبدوه، يُقَال لَهُ: البعل السَّيِّد.
تَفْسِير الْحَسَن: كَانَ اسْم صَنَمهمْ: بَعْلًا ﴿وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ الْخَالِقِينَ﴾.
