"They made for him what he willed of mihrabs [sanctuaries/elevated chambers]" means: mosques and palaces, in the interpretation of al-Kalbi.
Muhammad said: The most honorable place in a house or building is called a mihrab.
﴿يَعْمَلُونَ لَهُ مَا يَشَاءُ مِنْ محاريب﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمَسَاجِد والقصور؛ فِي تَفْسِير الكَلْبي.
قَالَ محمدٌ: يُقَال لأشرف مَوضِع فِي الدَّار أَو فِي الْبَيْت: محراب.
