"And they marveled," returning to His statement: "How many generations have We destroyed before them," informing how He destroyed them. Then He said: "That a warner from among themselves has come to them," meaning Muhammad, warning against the Fire and the punishment of Allah in this world. "And the disbelievers said, 'This is a sorcerer and a liar,'" meaning Muhammad.
﴿وعجبوا﴾ رَجَعَ إِلَى قَوْله: ﴿كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا من قبلهم من قرن﴾ أخبر كَيفَ أهلكهم , ثمَّ قَالَ: ﴿وَعَجِبُوا أَنْ جَاءَهُمْ مُنْذِرٌ مِنْهُمْ﴾ يَعْنِي: مُحَمَّدًا، ينذر من النَّار وَمن عَذَاب اللَّه فِي الدُّنْيَا ﴿وَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هَذَا سَاحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ﴾ يعنون: مُحَمَّدًا
