Al-Hasan said: So Allah revealed to him, "Strike the ground with your foot." He struck the ground with his foot while he was unable to stand, and behold, there was a spring, so he washed himself from it, and Allah removed the external part of his ailment. Then he walked for forty cubits, and it was said to him: "Strike the ground with your foot again." He struck it another time, and behold, there was a spring, so he drank from it, and Allah removed the internal part of his ailment and returned to him his family, his children, and his wealth of cattle, sheep, animals, and everything that had perished in its original form. Then Allah allowed him to remain with them until He gifted him the equivalent of them from their offspring. That is the meaning of His saying: "And We granted him his family and the like thereof with them as a mercy from Us." They had died—other than the death that came at their appointed times—by the power granted by Allah to Satan; so Allah brought them back to life and they lived until their appointed times were fulfilled.
Interpretation of verses 44 to 48 of Surah Sad.
قَالَ الْحَسَن: فَأوحى اللَّه إِلَيْهِ أَن اركض برجلك , فركض برجْله ركضة وَهُوَ لَا يَسْتَطِيع الْقيام؛ فَإِذا عينٌ فاغتسل مِنْهَا , فَأذْهب اللَّه ظَاهر دائه ثمَّ مَشى عَلَى رجليْه أَرْبَعِينَ ذِرَاعا , ثمَّ قِيلَ لَهُ: اركض برجلك أَيْضا , فركض ركضةً أُخْرَى , فَإِذا عينٌ فَشرب مِنْهَا , فَأذْهب اللَّه بَاطِن دائه وردّ عَلَيْهِ أَهله وَولده وأمواله من الْبَقر وَالْغنم وَالْحَيَوَان وكل شيءٍ هلك بِعَيْنِه , ثمَّ أبقاه اللَّه فِيهَا حَتَّى وهب لَهُ من نسولها أَمْثَالهَا , فَهُوَ قَوْله: ﴿وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُ أَهْلَهُ وَمِثْلَهُمْ مَعَهم رَحْمَة منا﴾ وَكَانُوا مَاتُوا غير الْمَوْت الَّذِي أَتَى عَلَى آجالهم تسليطًا من اللَّه للشَّيْطَان؛ فأحياهم اللَّه فوفَّاهم آجالهم.
