"[And He made it flow as] springs in the earth." The springs (yanabi') are the water sources. "Then He brings forth thereby crops of various colors, then they dry up and you see them yellowed, then He makes them debris," similar to His saying: "And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds" (Al-Kahf: 45).
Muhammad said: His saying "then they dry up" (thumma yahiju) means: they wither. It is said regarding vegetation when its drying is complete that the vegetation has 'haja' (withered) and continues to wither, and the earth has 'hajat' when the greenery within it has shriveled. 'Hutam' (debris) is that which has crumbled and broken from vegetation and other things.
﴿فسلكه ينابيع فِي الأَرْض﴾ والينابيع: الْعُيُون ﴿ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا مُخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَانُهُ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَاهُ مُصْفَرًّا ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ حُطَامًا﴾ كَقَوْلِه: ﴿وَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ مَثَلَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا كَمَاءٍ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَاخْتَلَطَ بِهِ نَبَاتُ الأَرْضِ فَأَصْبَحَ هشيما تَذْرُوهُ الرِّيَاح﴾.
قَالَ محمدٌ: قَوْله: ﴿ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ﴾ أَي: يجفُّ، يُقَال للنبت إِذا تمّ جفافه. قد هاج النبت يهيج , وهاجت الأَرْض إِذا ذَوَى مَا فِيهَا من الخُضَر والحطام: مَا تفتت وتكسَّر من النبت وَغَيره.
