Allah says: "But it is a trial"—meaning: an affliction—"but most of them do not know"—meaning: the group of polytheists.
Muhammad said: It is said that the meaning is: that gift is a trial from Allah by which He tests the servant so that he may either show gratitude or disbelief.
قَالَ اللَّهُ: ﴿بَلْ هِي فِتْنَةٌ﴾ يَعْنِي: بليّة ﴿وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يعلمُونَ﴾ يَعْنِي: جمَاعَة الْمُشْركين.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: قِيلَ: الْمَعْنى: تِلْكَ العطيَّة بلوى من اللَّه يَبْتَلِي بهَا العَبْد ليشكر أَو يكفر.
