[Without any authority having come to them], meaning: without any proof having come to them. [It is only pride in their breasts], meaning: there is nothing in their breasts [except pride; they will not reach it], meaning: their hope regarding Muhammad and his followers, that he should perish and they should perish.
﴿بِغَيْر سُلْطَان أَتَاهُم﴾ بِغَيْر حجَّة أَتَتْهُم ﴿إِنْ فِي صُدُورهمْ﴾ أَي: لَيْسَ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ ﴿إِلا كِبْرٌ مَا هم ببالغيه﴾ يَعْنِي: أملَهم فِي محمدٍ وَأهل دينه أَن يهْلك ويهلكوا.
