of the past nations in the lands, for they have seen the traces of that. "And in their own selves," He informed that afflictions would befall them. It was as He said, so Allah manifested it against them and tested them with what He tested them with.

Yahya said: Meaning, from the hunger in Mecca and the sword on the day of Badr.

"Until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth," meaning: the Quran. "Is it not sufficient that your Lord is over all things a Witness?" That is, witnessing their disbelief and their deeds. Meaning: Yes, He is sufficient as a Witness over them.

Muhammad said: The meaning is, is it not sufficient [concerning your Lord].
