"And they have taken besides Allah gods, that they might be helped," meaning: they might be protected.
﴿وَاتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ آلِهَةً لَعَلَّهُم ينْصرُونَ﴾ يمْنَعُونَ
