Qatadah said: Allah has explained to you what you should say when you travel by land, and what you should say when you travel by sea. When you travel by land, you say: "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it. And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return." And when you travel by sea, you say: "In the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage," and the rest of the verse.
Yahya [narrated] from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad, from Ayyub ibn Musa, from Sa'id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah: "That the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say when he mounted his camel: 'In the name of Allah. O Allah, shorten the earth for us and make our travel easy for us. O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Successor to [our] family. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, the sorrow of returning, and a bad sight regarding [our] family and wealth.'"
