His saying: "And it will not benefit you this day, as you have done wrong"—meaning: as you have associated others with Allah—"that you are partners in the punishment." He and his devil are joined in a single chain; each of them disavows the other, and each of them curses the other.
Muhammad said: Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Mubarrad mentioned that the meaning of this verse is that they are denied the comfort of shared experience (al-ta'assi); for shared experience alleviates affliction. So, they were informed that partnership in the punishment would not benefit them. And he cited the lines of al-Khansa:
(And were it not for the multitude of those weeping around me... for their brothers, I would have killed myself)
(For they do not weep for one like my brother, but rather... I console the soul for him through shared experience)
Tafsir of Surah al-Zukhruf from verse 40 to verse 47.
قَوْله ﴿وَلَنْ يَنْفَعَكُمُ الْيَوْمَ إِذْ ظلمتم﴾ إِذْ أشركتم ﴿أَنَّكُمْ فِي الْعَذَابِ مشتركون﴾ يقرن هُوَ وشيطانه فِي سلسلة وَاحِدَة، يتبرأ كل واحدٍ مِنْهُمَا من صَاحبه، ويلعن كل واحدٍ مِنْهُمَا صَاحبه.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: ذكر مُحَمَّد بن يزِيد المبَرِّد أَن معنى هَذِه الْآيَة: أَنهم مُنِعُوا روحَ التأسِّي؛ لِأَن التأسِّي يُسَهِّل الْمُصِيبَة، فأعلموا أَنه لَا يَنْفَعهُمْ الِاشْتِرَاك فِي الْعَذَاب. وَأنْشد للخنساء.
(وَلَوْلَا كَثْرَة الباكين حَولي … على إخْوَانهمْ لقتلتُ نَفسِي)
(فَمَا يَبْكُونَ مثلَ أخي وَلَكِن … أُعزِّي النَّفس عَنهُ بالتأسي)
