Muhammad said: The meaning of "salafan" (a precedent) is: a preceding group that came before, according to the reading of those who recited it with a fatha on the sin and the lam.

قَالَ مُحَمَّد: وَمعنى ﴿سلفا﴾ أَي: قدمًا تقدَّموا؛ فِي قِرَاءَة من قَرَأَهَا بِفَتْح السِّين وَاللَّام.
