{And those who believe say, 'Why'}—meaning, why is {not a surah sent down}—{decisive}, meaning: in which fighting is ordained.
{You see those in whose hearts is a disease}, meaning: the hypocrites, {looking at you with the look of one fainting from death}, out of fear and hatred for fighting. {So woe to them}; this is a threat from Allah to them, then the speech is interrupted.
﴿وَيَقُول الَّذين آمنُوا لَوْلَا﴾ هلا ﴿نُزِّلَتْ سُورَةٌ﴾ ﴿محكمَة﴾ أَي: مفروضٌ فِيهَا الْقِتَال.
﴿رَأَيْتَ الَّذين فِي قُلُوبهم مرض﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمُنَافِقين ﴿يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ نَظَرَ المغشي عَلَيْهِ من الْمَوْت﴾ خوفًا وكراهية لِلْقِتَالِ ﴿فَأَوْلَى لَهُمْ﴾ هَذَا وعيدٌ من اللَّه لَهُم، ثمَّ انْقَطع الْكَلَام.
