He said: {So would you perhaps}, if you were to turn away from the hypocrisy within your hearts until you manifest it as polytheism, {cause corruption on earth and sever your ties of kinship?}, meaning: that you kill your relatives.
Muhammad said: Nafi' recited {asitum} with a kasrah under the sin, while more than one of the reciters recited it with a fathah, which is the higher and more eloquent of the two linguistic dialects; this was mentioned by Abu Ubayd.
قَالَ: ﴿فَهَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ﴾ عَمَّا فِي قُلُوبكُمْ من النِّفَاق حَتَّى تظهروه شركا ﴿أَنْ تُفْسِدُوا فِي الأَرْض وتقطعوا أَرْحَامكُم﴾ أَي: تقتلُوا قرابتكم.
قَالَ محمدٌ: قَرَأَ نَافِع ﴿عَسِيتُمْ﴾ بكَسْر السِّين، وَقَرَأَ غير وَاحِد من الْقُرَّاء بِالْفَتْح، وَهِي أَعلَى اللغتين وأفصحهما؛ ذكره أَبُو عبيد.
