"When those who disbelieved put into their hearts pride"—they are the polytheists; they barred the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the day of Hudaybiyyah from the Sacred Mosque, and the sacrificial animals were restrained from reaching their place of slaughter. They were only driven to do that by the pride of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) and adherence to it. "But Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and made them abide by the word of righteousness"—(which is) There is no god but Allah—"and they were more deserving of it and worthy of it" in this world, and upon it, the reward in the Hereafter is based.
