"Neither will there be any 'ghawl' (intoxication/harm) in it, nor will they be intoxicated by it," meaning: when they drink it, they do not become intoxicated, so their intellects do not vanish.
Muhammad said: It is said that wine is a 'ghawl' to one's reasoning, and war is a 'ghawl' to souls; meaning: it takes them away. Abu 'Ubayd mentioned that the recitation of Nafi' is "yunzafuna" (they will not be intoxicated) with a fatha on the za' in this instance, and in
﴿لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلا هُمْ عَنْهَا ينزفون﴾ أَي: إِذا شَرِبُوهَا لَا يَسْكرون؛ فتذهب عقولُهم.
قَالَ محمدٌ: يُقَال: الخمْر غَوْلٌ للحلْمِ، والحربُ غَوْلٌ للنفوس؛ أَي: تذْهب بهَا. وَذكر أَبُو عُبَيْد أَن قِرَاءَة نَافِع (ينزَفون) بِفَتْح الزَّاي فِي هَذِه، وَفِي
