the sin, then not return to it.' (1)

"It may be that your Lord" — and [the word] 'may be' (ʿasā) from Allah is binding — "will remove from you your misdeeds."

Muhammad said: Whoever reads it as 'nasūḥan' with a fathah on the nun, it is an adjective for the repentance, and its meaning is: a repentance that is mature in sincerity. And whoever reads it as 'nuṣūḥan' with a dammah on the nun, its meaning is: they are being counseled in it with sincere counsel (2). It is said: I counseled him (naṣaḥtu lahu) with counsel (nuṣḥan) and sincerity (nuṣūḥan). (3)

Yahya [related] from al-Furat, from Abd al-Karim, from Ziyad ibn al-Jarrah, from Abd Allah (4) ibn Ma'qil, who said: "My father was with Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, and I heard him say to Abd Allah: 'Did you hear the Messenger of Allah say: Regret is repentance?' He said: 'Yes.'" (5)
