"So-and-so has risen." Qatadah said: What happens after the Isha prayer is part of the 'rising of the night'. 'It is more effective in exerting oneself' (ashaddu wat'an). It is read as 'wat'an' with an open waw and short, and 'wita'an' with a kasrah under the waw and extended. Whoever reads it 'wat'an' with an open waw, its interpretation according to Qatadah is 'more established in goodness.' Whoever reads it with a kasrah under the waw and extended, its interpretation according to Ibn Abbas is 'more in conformity for the heart,' because it is free (of distractions), as sounds calm down at night.
Muhammad said: Wita' is the masdar (verbal noun) of wata'tu (I conformed). He meant the conformity of the heart and hearing to understand the Quran and the rulings for its interpretation. Yahya held the same view.
His saying: 'And more suitable for speech' (aqwamu qilan), meaning more truthful in recitation and more likely that the Satan will not confuse your recitation for you.
نَشَأَ فُلانٌ. قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: وَمَا كَانَ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ فَهُوَ مِنْ ناشئة اللَّيْل ﴿هِيَ أَشد وطئا﴾ وَهِيَ تُقْرَأُ ((وَطْأ)) مَفْتُوحَةَ الْوَاوِ مَقْصُورَةً، وَوِطَاءً مَكْسُورَةَ الْوَاوِ مَمْدُودَةً، فَمن قَرَأَهَا ﴿وطئا﴾ بِفَتْحِ الْوَاوِ، فَتَفْسِيرُهَا عِنْدَ قَتَادَةَ أَثْبَتُ فِي الْخَيْرِ، وَمَنْ قَرَأَهَا بِكَسْرِ الْوَاوِ وَالْمَدِّ فَتَفْسِيرُهَا عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَشَدُّ مُوَاطَأَةٍ لِلْقَلْبِ لِفَرَاغِهِ؛ لِأَنَّ الْأَصْوَاتَ تَهْدَأُ فِي اللَّيْلِ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: وِطَاء مصدَر وَاطَأْتُ، وَأَرَادَ مُواطأة الْقَلْبِ وَالسَّمْعِ عَلَى الْفَهْمِ لِلْقُرْآنِ وَالْأَحْكَامِ لِتَأْوِيلِهِ. وَإِلَيْهِ ذَهَبَ يَحْيَى.
وَقَوْلُهُ: ﴿وَأَقْوَمُ قيلا﴾ أَيْ أَصْدَقُ فِي التِّلاوَةِ وأجدرُ أَلَّا يُلبِس عَلَيْكَ الشَّيْطَانُ تِلاوَتَكَ
