And likewise is His saying: "And I swear by the self-reproaching soul," meaning I swear. Al-Hasan said: It is the soul of the believer, for you do not encounter the believer but that he is blaming his soul, saying: 'What did I intend by my speech? What did I intend by such and such? What did I intend by such and such?' He regrets what has passed and blames himself.
وَكَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ ﴿وَلا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللوامة﴾ مَعْنَاهُ أقسم. قَالَ الْحسن: وَهُوَ نفسُ الْمُؤْمِنِ، إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَا تَلْقَاهُ إِلَّا وَهُوَ يَلُومُ نَفْسَهُ، يَقُولُ: مَا أَرَدْتُ بِكَلامِي، مَا أَرَدْتُ بِكَذَا، مَا أَرَدْتُ بِكَذَا، يَنْدَمُ عَلَى مَا فَاتَ، وَيَلُومُ نَفسه
