"Indeed, they did not expect" means: they did not fear "any reckoning," for they did not believe in the Resurrection.
﴿إِنَّهُم كَانُوا لَا يرجون﴾ لَا يخَافُونَ ﴿حسابا﴾ لَا يقرونَ بِالْبَعْثِ
