Allah said: "If you two turn in repentance to Allah," meaning Hafsa and Aisha, "for your hearts have indeed deviated," meaning they have swerved towards sin, so He commanded them to repent. "And if you back each other up," meaning if you cooperate, "against him," against the Prophet, "then indeed Allah is his Protector," his Ally in aiding him, "and Gabriel," his ally, "and the righteous among the believers," and they are the prophets, "and after that," along with that, "the angels are assistants," meaning they are his helpers, referring to the Prophet.
قَالَ اللَّهُ: ﴿إِنْ تَتُوبَا إِلَى الله﴾ يَعْنِي: حَفْصَةَ وَعَائِشَةَ ﴿فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبكُمَا﴾ أَيْ: زَاغَتْ إِلَى الْإِثْمِ، فَأَمَرَهُمَا بِالتَّوْبَةِ ﴿وَإِن تظاهرا﴾ أَي: تعاونا ﴿عَلَيْهِ﴾ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﴿فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ مَوْلَاهُ﴾ وليُّه فِي الْعَوْنِ لَهُ ﴿وَجِبْرِيلُ﴾ وليُّه ﴿وَصَالح الْمُؤمنِينَ﴾ وهم النَّبِيُّونَ ﴿بعد ذَلِك﴾ مَعَ ذَلِك ﴿ظهير﴾ أَيْ: أعوانٌّ لَهُ، يَعْنِي: النَّبِيَّ.
