"Or do you ask them," He says to the Prophet: Or do you ask the polytheists for a reward for the Quran, "for a fee, so they are burdened by debt?" meaning: the debt has burdened them; that is, you did not ask them for any reward.
﴿أم تَسْأَلهُمْ﴾ يَقُولُ لِلنَّبِيِّ: أَمْ تَسْأَلُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ عَلَى الْقُرْآنِ ﴿أَجْرًا فَهُمْ مِنْ مغرم مثقلون﴾ أَيْ: قَدْ أَثْقَلَهُمُ الغُرْم؛ أَيْ أَنَّك لم تَسْأَلهُمْ أجرا
