His saying: "So repent to your Creator"
526 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: "So repent to your Creator," meaning to your Maker. He said: And Sa'id ibn Jubayr and al-Rabi' ibn Anas interpreted it similarly.
His saying: "So kill yourselves; that is better for you in the sight of your Creator"
527 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Wasiti and Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from al-Ashbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: Their repentance was that every man among them should kill everyone he met, whether father or son, and kill him with the sword, not caring whom he killed in that place. Those whom Moses and Aaron had not known—because Allah had disclosed their sins—repented, confessed them, and did what they were commanded to do, so Allah forgave both the killer and the killed.
528 - Al-Hasan ibn al-Sabah narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, al-Qasim ibn Abi Bazzah informed me that he heard Sa'id ibn Jubayr and Mujahid saying regarding His saying: "So kill yourselves," they said: Some of them rose against others with daggers, and they killed one another. No man showed mercy to a relative or a stranger, until Moses signaled with his garment, and they threw down what was in their hands. It was uncovered that there were seventy thousand killed. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to Moses: "That is enough for me, I have had enough," and that was when Moses signaled with his garment.
529 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Sa'id informed me, from Qatadah, he said: He ordered the people with a severe command, so they stood up fighting one another with daggers, and they killed one another until Allah had exacted His vengeance upon them and the daggers fell from their hands, and He withheld the killing from them. He made it a repentance for their living, and a martyrdom for the killed.
530 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Hashim al-Ramli narrated to us, Damrah narrated to us, from Ibn Shawdhab, from al-Hasan: regarding His saying: "So kill yourselves," he said: A pitch-black darkness befell the Children of Israel, and they killed one another, then it lifted from them, and He made that their repentance.
His saying: "That is better for you"
531 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "better for you," meaning more excellent.
