His saying: "Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful."

532 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Raja' narrated to us, Isra'il informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Umarah ibn 'Abd and Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Ali, he said: They said to Moses: "What is our repentance?" He said: "Some of you kill others." So they took knives, and a man began to kill his brother, his father, and his mother, not caring whom he killed, until seventy thousand of them were killed. Then Allah revealed to Moses: "Order them to raise their hands, for Allah has forgiven those who were killed, and accepted the repentance of those who remained."

533 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "So kill yourselves," he said: Those who had worshipped it and those who had not worshipped it fought one another with swords. Whoever was killed from either party was a martyr, until the killing became so numerous that they were about to perish, and until seventy thousand of them were killed, and until Moses and Aaron prayed: "Our Lord, You have destroyed the Children of Israel! Our Lord, the rest, the rest!" So He commanded them to lay down their weapons and He accepted their repentance. Whoever was killed from either party was a martyr, and whoever remained had his sins expiated. That is His saying: "Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful."

His saying: "And when you said, 'O Moses, we will not believe you until we see Allah outright.'"

534 - My father narrated to me, he said: Ahmad ibn Hafs ibn 'Abd Allah al-Naysaburi wrote to me, my father narrated to me, Ibrahim ibn Tahman narrated to me, from 'Abbad ibn Ishaq, from Abu al-Huwayrith, from Ibn 'Abbas, that he said regarding the saying of Allah: "We will not believe you until we see Allah outright," meaning plainly, that is, until we see Allah.

535 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Sa'id informed me, from Qatadah, regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And when you said, 'O Moses, we will not believe you until we see Allah outright,'" meaning visibly. Abu Muhammad said: And al-Rabi' ibn Anas interpreted it similarly: visibly.

His saying: "So the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on."

536 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Sadaqah al-Himsii and 'Isa ibn Yunus al-Ramli narrated to us, they said: Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb ibn Shabur narrated to us, he said: I heard 'Urwah ibn Ruwaym saying: The Children of Israel asked Moses and said: "We will not believe you until we see Allah outright." He informed them that they would not be able to bear that, but they refused. So they heard the speech of Allah, and some of them were struck by the thunderbolt while others were looking on. Then those were resurrected, and those were struck by the thunderbolt. The narration follows Muhammad's version.
