And they did not endure it, and they recalled the life they used to live in. They were a people of lentils, onions, herbs, and fūm. So they remembered their life from that and said: "O Moses! We can never endure one food, so call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from what the earth grows: its herbs, its cucumbers, its fūm, its lentils, and its onions."
His saying: "He said, 'Would you exchange what is better for what is inferior?'"
617 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid al-Narsi informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us from Qatadah: "'Would you exchange what is inferior'—that which is worse—'for what is better?'" It was narrated from al-Hasan similarly.
His saying: "Go down to a settlement (misran)"

618 - Al-'Abbas ibn Yazid al-'Abdi narrated to us, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us from Abu Sa'd al-Baqqal from 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Go down to a settlement (misran)," he said: A settlement from among the settlements. It was narrated from al-Suddi, Qatadah, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas similarly.

619 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us from al-Rabi' from Abu al-'Aliyah, he said: He means by it the Egypt (Misr) of Pharaoh.
620 - Al-Fadl ibn Shadhan narrated to us, Ishaq ibn al-Hajjaj narrated to us, Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us from al-Kisa'i from al-A'mash, he said: It is the Egypt (Misr) which Salih ibn 'Ali is over, and he was in charge of it at that time.
His saying: "For you shall have what you have asked for."
621 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi: "Go down to a settlement (misran) for you shall have what you have asked for." When they left the wilderness (al-tih), the manna and quails were removed, and they ate the herbs.

622 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Qasim al-Asadi narrated to us from 'Ubayd ibn Tufayl al-Tufawi Abu Sidan from al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And humiliation and misery were struck upon them," he said: They are the people of the qubalat (poll tax), who disbelieved in Allah the Great. Abu Muhammad said: He means by "the people of the qubalat," the people of the jizyah (tribute).
وَلَمْ يَصْبِرُوا عَلَيْهِ وَذَكَرُوا عَيْشَهُمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يَعِيشُونَ فِيهِ، وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا أَهْلَ أَعْدَاسٍ وَبَصَلٍ وَبُقُولٍ وَفُومٍ، فَذَكَرُوا عَيْشَهُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا: يَا مُوسَى لَنْ نَصْبِرَ عَلَى طَعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ مِنْ بَقْلِهَا وَقِثَّائِهَا وَفُومِهَا وَعَدَسِهَا وَبَصَلِهَا.
قَوْلُهُ: قَالَ أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَى بِالذي هُوَ خَيْرٌ
٦١٧ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَنْبَأَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ النَّرْسِيُّ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ثنا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ: أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَى - الَّذِي هُوَ شَرٌّ- بِالذي هُوَ خَيْرٌ. وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
قَوْلُهُ: اهْبِطُوا مِصْرًا

٦١٨ - حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْعَبْدِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعْدٍ الْبَقَّالِ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: اهْبِطُوا مِصْرًا قَالَ: مِصْرًا مِنَ الأَمْصَارِ وَرُوِيَ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ وَقَتَادَةَ وَالرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
الْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:
٦١٩ - حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ ثنا آدَمُ ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ قَالَ:
يَعْنِي بِهِ مِصْرَ فِرْعَوْنَ.
٦٢٠ - حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ شَاذَانَ ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ عَنِ الْكِسَائِيِّ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ قَالَ: هِيَ مِصْرُ الَّتِي عَلَيْهَا صَالِحُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، وَكَانَ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا.
قَوْلُهُ: فَإِنَّ لَكُمْ مَا سَأَلْتُمْ
٦٢١ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ثنا أَسْبَاطٌ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ: اهْبِطُوا مِصْرًا فَإِنَّ لَكُمْ مَا سَأَلْتُمْ فَلَمَّا خَرَجُوا مِنَ التِّيهِ رُفَعَ الْمَنُّ وَالسَّلْوَى وأكلوا البقول.

٦٢٢ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ الأَسَدِيُّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ طُفَيْلٍ الطُّفَاوِيِّ أَبِي سِيدَانَ عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ بْنِ مُزَاحِمٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ في قوله: وضربت عليهم الذلة والمسكنة قَالَ هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْقُبَالاتِ، كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ- قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ: يَعْنِي بِأَصْحَابِ الْقُبَالاتِ أَصْحَابَ الْجِزْيَةِ.
