And the fourth opinion:

640 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Arzami narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us from Mutarrif who said: We were with al-Hakam when a man from Basra narrated to him from al-Hasan that he used to say regarding the Sabaeans that they are like the Magians. Al-Hakam said: Did I not tell you that?

And the fifth opinion:

641 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us by way of reading, Ibn Wahb informed us, Ibn Abi al-Zinad informed me from his father who said: The Sabaeans are a people from those near Iraq, and it is in Kush. They believe in all the prophets, they fast for thirty days of every year, and they pray five prayers every day facing Yemen.

And the sixth opinion:

642 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, he said: Abu Ja'far al-Razi said: It has reached me that the Sabaeans are a people who worship the angels, read the Psalms, and pray facing the Qibla.

643 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us from Mu'awiyah ibn 'Abd al-Karim who said: I heard al-Hasan, and he mentioned the Sabaeans, and said: They are a people who worship the angels.

And the seventh opinion:

644 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tihrani informed us in what he wrote to me, Isma'il ibn 'Abd al-Karim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Samad ibn Ma'qil narrated to us from Wahb ibn Munabbih that it was said to him: Who are the Sabaeans? He said: One who knows Allah alone, has no revealed law (Shari'ah) to act upon, and has not committed disbelief.

The eighth opinion:

645 - Al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And the Sabaeans" - he said: Between the Magians and the Jews; they have no religion.

His saying: "Whoever believes in Allah"

646 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas: His saying "whoever believes in Allah" means whoever declares Allah to be One (Tawhid).

وَالْقَوْلُ الرَّابِعُ:

٦٤٠ - مَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْعَرْزَمِيُّ ثنا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ قَالَ كُنَّا عِنْدَ الْحَكَمِ فَحَدَّثَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْبَصْرَةِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ فِي الصَّابِئِينَ إِنَّهُمْ كَالْمَجُوسِ، قَالَ الْحَكَمُ: أَلَمْ أُخْبِرْكُمْ بِذَلِكَ؟

وَالْقَوْلُ الْخَامِسُ:

٦٤١ - مَا حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى قِرَاءَةً، أَنْبَأَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: الصابئون قوم مما يلي العراق، وهو بكوش، وَهُمْ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالنَّبِيِّينَ كُلِّهِمْ، وَيَصُومُونَ مِنْ كُلِّ سَنَةٍ شَهْرًا ثَلاثِينَ يَوْمًا وَيُصَلُّونَ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ.

وَالْقَوْلُ السَّادِسُ:

٦٤٢ - مَا حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ ثنا آدَمُ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الرَّازِيُّ: بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ الصَّابِئِينَ قوم يَعْبُدُونَ الْمَلائِكَةَ وَيَقْرَءُونَ الزَّبُورَ وَيُصَلُّونَ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ.

٦٤٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ، فَذَكَرَ الصَّابِئِينَ فَقَالَ هُمْ قَوْمٌ يَعْبُدُونَ الْمَلائِكَةَ.

وَالْقَوْلُ السَّابِعُ:

٦٤٤ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الطِّهْرَانِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ ثنا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ مَعْقِلٍ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ: مَا الصابئين؟ قَالَ: الَّذِي يَعْرِفُ اللَّهَ وَحْدَهُ وَلَيْسَتْ لَهُ شَرِيعَةٌ يَعْمَلُ بِهَا وَلَمْ يُحْدِثْ كُفْرًا.

الْقَوْلُ الثَّامِنُ:

٦٤٥ - مَا حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا وَرْقَاءُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ:

قَوْلُهُ: وَالصَّابِئِينَ «١» قَالَ: بَيْنَ الْمَجُوسِ وَالْيَهُودِ، لَا دِينَ لَهُمْ.

قوله: مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ

٦٤٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ كَاتِبُ اللَّيْثِ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ ابْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: قَوْلُهُ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ يَعْنِي مَنْ وَحَّدَ اللَّهَ.
