His saying: "Do you [believers] hope that they would believe you?"

768 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Then He said to His Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and to those with him from the believers, despairing them [the believers] of them [the Jews]: "Do you hope that they would believe you?"

769 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas regarding the saying of the Exalted: "Do you hope that they would believe you?" Meaning the companions of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He says: Do you hope that the Jews will believe you? He said: And something similar was narrated from al-Hasan.

His saying: "While a party of them used to hear the word of Allah"

770 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "While a party of them used to hear the word of Allah." His saying does not mean that all of them heard the Torah, but rather those who asked Moses to see their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them for that.

771 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas: "While a party of them used to hear the word of Allah." They used to hear the revelation; they would hear from that what the people of prophethood would hear, then they would distort it after they had understood it, while they knew.

772 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: Regarding what some people of knowledge narrated to me: That they said to Moses, "O Moses, a barrier has been placed between us and seeing Allah, so make us hear His speech when He speaks to you." So Moses requested that from his Lord, and He said: "Yes. Order them to purify themselves, and to purify their clothes, and to fast." So they did. Then he went out with them until they came to the Mount. When the clouds covered them, Moses ordered them, and they fell down prostrating, and His Lord spoke to him. When they heard His speech commanding them and forbidding them until they understood from Him what they heard, he then returned with them to the Children of Israel."

(1). See Ibn Kathir 1/164, where he said: "This which al-Suddi mentioned is more significant than what Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn Ishaq mentioned, for it necessitates, from the hearing of the word of Allah—and with him, those who distort it—that it be as the Interlocutor [Kalim] Moses, peace be upon him, heard it. And Allah the Exalted has said: 'And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the word of Allah,' meaning: reached to him" 1/165.
