His saying: "So when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it. So the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers."
905 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us, Yunus ibn Bukayr al-Hazimi narrated to us, Ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad told me, 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr informed me, from Ibn 'Abbas: The Jews used to seek victory over the Aws and the Khazraj by [the advent of] the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, before his mission. But when Allah sent him from the Arabs, they disbelieved in him and denied what they used to say about him. Then Mu'adh ibn Jabal, Bishr ibn al-Bara', and Dawud ibn Salamah said to them: "O assembly [of Jews], fear Allah and embrace Islam; for you used to seek victory over us by Muhammad when we were polytheists, and you would inform us that he was to be sent, and you would describe him." Salam ibn Mishkam, a brother of the Banu al-Nadir, said: "He has not brought us anything we recognize, and he is not the one we used to mention to you." So Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed regarding this statement of theirs: "And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming what is with them, and they were, from before, seeking victory over those who disbelieved; so when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it. So the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers."
906 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, who said: The Jews used to seek aid through Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, against the polytheist Arabs, saying: "O Allah, send this Prophet whom we find written with us so that he may punish the polytheists and we may kill them." But when Allah sent Muhammad and they saw that he was from other than them, they disbelieved in him out of envy for the Arabs, while they knew that he was the Messenger of Allah. So Allah said: "So when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it. So the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers."
907 - Al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah al-Harawi narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujahid: "So when there came to them that which they recognized"—and it was from other than them—"they disbelieved in it. So the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers."
His saying: "How wretched is the price for which they sold their own selves"
908 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "How wretched is the price for which they sold their own selves," he said: They sold their own selves for it.
909 - Al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah al-Harawi narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujahid: "How wretched is the price for which they sold their own selves," [it means] the Jews sold the truth for falsehood and [practiced] the concealment of what Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had brought by [the fact] that they made it clear [to themselves].
