So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning that his saying: "And We have certainly sent down to you signs [as] clear proofs, and no one disbelieves in them except the defiantly disobedient (al-fasiqun)."

972 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding His saying: "the defiantly disobedient (al-fasiqun)": He said, "The liars."

His saying: "Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant"

973 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us, Yunus ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad, 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr informed me, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Malik ibn al-Dayf said when the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was sent—and he reminded them of what had been taken from them of the covenant and what was promised to them regarding Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "By Allah, no covenant was made with us regarding Muhammad, nor was any pledge taken from us." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant, a party of them threw it away?"
