may Allah bless him and grant him peace: "Lend us your hearing (ar'ina sam'aka)." The expression 'ra'ina' is like when you address someone affectionately. It was narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, Abu Malik, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi, and Qatadah something similar.
The second interpretation:
1039 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Mu'awiyah narrated to us from 'Abd al-Malik from 'Ata': regarding 'Do not say Ra'ina,' he said: 'It was a dialect the Ansar used to say, so Allah forbade it.' He said: 'Do not say Ra'ina, and say: Unzurna (look upon us), and listen.'
The third interpretation:
1040 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid: regarding His saying: 'Do not say Ra'ina'—meaning, in disagreement.'
The fourth interpretation:
1041 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Abu Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us from 'Abbad ibn Mansur from al-Hasan: regarding 'Do not say Ra'ina,' he said: 'The word ra'in (shepherd/herder) in speech is [used for] mockery. Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, forbade them from mocking the speech of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and what he invited them to of Islam.'
The fifth interpretation:
1042 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hisinjani narrated to us, Sa'id ibn al-Hakam ibn Abi Maryam narrated to us, Mufaddal—meaning, Ibn Fadalah—informed us, Abu Sakhr narrated to me: 'Do not say Ra'ina and say Unzurna,' he said: 'The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to be called upon by those of the believers who had a need when he turned away, so they would say: "Lend us your hearing (ar'ina sam'aka)," and Allah exalted His Messenger from having that said to him.'

1043 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, 'Uqbah ibn Khalid narrated to us from Isra'il from Jabir from Mujahid and 'Ata': 'Unzurna' means: 'Listen to us.'
