The third interpretation:
1057 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "Whatever We abrogate of a verse." He said: "We abrogate it" means "We seize it." Abu Muhammad said: He means "We seize it," or "We lift it up," such as: "The old man and the old woman if they commit adultery, stone them both, absolutely," and his saying: "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would seek a third."
His saying: "Or We cause it to be forgotten"
There is a difference of opinion regarding its interpretation, based on several views:
[The first interpretation]
1058 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl Muhammad ibn al-Zubayr al-Harrani narrated to us, from al-Hajjaj al-Jazari, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "Among what would be sent down to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was revelation at night, and he would forget it by day. So Allah sent down: 'Whatever We abrogate of a verse or cause to be forgotten, We bring [one] better than it or similar to it.'"
1059 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Shababah and 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn 'Ata' narrated to us, and the phrasing is that of Shababah: Shu'bah informed us, from Ya'la ibn 'Ata', who said: I heard al-Qasim ibn Rabi'ah—meaning the son of 'Abd Allah ibn Rabi'ah ibn Qanif—say: I said to Sa'd ibn Malik: "I heard Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib say: 'Whatever We abrogate of a verse or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it.'" So Sa'd said: "Allah did not reveal the Quran to Sa'id, nor to his father." Then Sa'd recited: "Whatever We abrogate of a verse or cause to be forgotten."
1060 - In the hadith of 'Abd al-Wahhab: "Or you forget it," meaning you, O Muhammad. Then he recited: "We will make you recite, so you will not forget." And in the hadith of Shababah, there is an addition: "Then he recited: 'And remember your Lord when you have forgotten.'" Muhammad ibn Ka'b, Qatadah, and 'Ikrimah narrated something similar to the view of Sa'id.
[The second interpretation]
1061 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "Whatever We abrogate of a verse or cause to be forgotten," he said: "The abrogating [verse] from the abrogated [verse]."
1062 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn 'Ata' narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujahid: "Or cause it to be forgotten," he said: "We retain its script and replace its ruling." It was narrated from the companions of Ibn Mas'ud something similar to this.
