The second interpretation:

1075 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Shababah ibn Sawwar informed us, from Warqa', from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding: "Or do you want to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before?"—that is, to have Allah show them [Himself] openly. He said: Quraish asked Muhammad to make al-Safa for them [into] gold. He said: "Yes, and it shall be for you as the table (al-ma'idah) was for the Children of Israel." But they refused and turned back.

The third interpretation:

1076 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "Or do you want to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before?" He said: A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only our expiation were like the expiations of the Children of Israel?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "O Allah, we do not desire it," [repeating this] three times. "What Allah has given you is better than what He gave the Children of Israel. The Children of Israel, when one of them committed a sin, would find it written on his door along with its expiation. If he performed the expiation, it was a disgrace for him in this world; and if he did not perform the expiation, it was a disgrace for him in the Hereafter. So, what Allah has given you is better than what He gave the Children of Israel." He said: "Whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful." And he (ﷺ) said: "The five prayers, from Friday to Friday, are expiations for what lies between them." And he said: "Whoever intends to do a bad deed but does not do it, it is not written against him; and if he does it, it is written as one. And whoever intends to do a good deed but does not do it, it is written for him as one good deed, and if he does it, it is written for him as ten times its like." And no one perishes before Allah except one who is doomed. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Or do you want to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before?"

The fourth interpretation:

1077 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "Or do you want to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before?"—that is, to have Allah show them [Himself] openly. So the Arabs asked Muhammad to bring them Allah so they could see Him openly. Similar was narrated from Qatadah.
