His saying, Exalted is He: "And the likeness of those who disbelieve is as the likeness of one who shouts at that which hears nothing but calls and cries."
1513 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us, in what he wrote to me: My father narrated to us, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas: "The likeness of those who disbelieve is as the likeness of one who shouts at that which hears nothing but calls and cries" is like the camel, the donkey, or the sheep; if you speak words to some of them, it does not understand what you are saying, other than that it hears your voice. Similarly, the disbeliever, if you command him with good, forbid him from evil, or preach to him, he does not comprehend what you are saying, other than that he hears your voice. It is reported from Abu al-'Aliyah, Mujahid, 'Ikrimah, 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, al-Hasan, Qatadah, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas something similar to this.
1514 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "As the likeness of one who shouts at that which hears nothing but calls and cries," meaning: He does not understand what is said to him, except that he is called or shouted at, so he moves away. As for the one who shouts, he is the shepherd of the sheep, just as the shepherd shouts at that which does not hear what is said to it except that it is called or shouted at. Thus is Muhammad (peace be upon him) calling those who hear nothing but empty speech.
His saying: "Deaf, dumb, blind."
Its interpretation has already preceded.
His saying: "O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is Him that you worship."
1515 - Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Abu 'Amir al-Khazzaz narrated to us, from al-Hasan, regarding the saying of Allah: "Eat from the good things which We have provided for you." He said: He did not mention your red or your yellow [i.e., gold or saffron, etc.], but He said: You stop at what is lawful. It is reported from Muqatil something similar.
1516 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah, who said: It is a bounty with which Allah has honored you, so give thanks to Allah for His favor.
His saying, Exalted is He: "He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, and the flesh of swine."
1517 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abdullah ibn Bashar narrated to us, Surur narrated to me.
(1). Ibn Kathir said: This is disconnected (munqati'), for Mujahid did not meet Abu Dharr, as he [Abu Dharr] died long ago. 1/296.
