‘Urwah, from his father, that ‘Ali visited a man from his people to check on him and said to him: "Should I make a bequest?" ‘Ali said to him: "Allah only said: 'If he leaves wealth' for the bequest, and you have only left a small amount, so leave it for your children."
1600 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding: "If he leaves wealth" - meaning: wealth.
It was reported from Mujahid, ‘Abdah, ‘Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah, Abu al-'Aliyah, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, ‘Atiyyah, al-Dahhak, al-Suddi, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, and Qatadah, similar to the statement of Ibn ‘Abbas regarding those who interpreted it as referring to the amount of wealth from which a bequest is made.
1601 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to me, Hafs ibn ‘Umar al-'Adani informed us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, ‘Ikrimah narrated to me, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding: "If he leaves wealth" - Ibn ‘Abbas said: Whoever does not leave sixty dinars has not left wealth. And al-Hakam said: One who has not left eighty dinars has not left wealth.
1602 - Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri' narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Hisham, from his father who said: It was said to ‘Ali that a man from Quraysh died and left three hundred or four hundred dinars and did not make a bequest. He said: "It is nothing, for Allah only said: 'If he leaves wealth'."
1603 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Khuza'i narrated to us, Hammam informed us, he said: I heard Qatadah regarding: "If he leaves wealth" - he said: Wealth is money. It used to be said: One thousand and above. Abu Muhammad [Ibn Abi Hatim] said: He means one thousand dirhams.
His saying: "Bequest is for parents and relatives in fairness"
1604 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj and ‘Uthman ibn ‘Ata’ informed us, from ‘Ata’, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "Bequest is for parents and relatives" - this verse was abrogated by: "For men is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, and for women is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, be it little or much - a legal share." It was reported from Ibn ‘Umar, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, al-Hasan, Mujahid, ‘Ata’, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Muhammad ibn Sirin, Zayd ibn Aslam, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, Qatadah, al-Suddi, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Shurayh, al-Dahhak, and al-Zuhri, that this verse is abrogated, and it was abrogated by the verse of inheritance.
