It was reported from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ibn ‘Umar, ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, al-Sha’bi, Nafi’ ibn Jubayr ibn Mut’im, and Ibn Sirin that they said: It may be made up consecutively.
[His saying: ‘And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship’]
[The First Aspect]
Those who interpreted it as being abrogated, except for the very old person, the pregnant woman, and the nursing woman.
1634 - Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri’ narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from ‘Ata’, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: ‘And upon those who are able to fast [but with hardship]’—he said: They are burdened with it, and it is the very old man and the very old woman; they feed a poor person for every day and do not make it up.
1635 - Abu Sa’id ibn Yahya ibn Sa’id al-Qattan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, Sa’id narrated to us, from Qatadah, from ‘Urwah, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr that Ibn ‘Abbas said: A concession was given to the very old man and the very old woman while they were able to fast; if they wished, they could feed [a poor person] and not fast. Then it was abrogated after that, for Allah said: ‘So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it, and whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days.’ It remained for the very old man and the very old woman—if they are unable to fast—that they should feed [a poor person], and for the pregnant and nursing woman, if they fear [for themselves or their child], they may break the fast and feed a poor person for every day, and they have no obligation to make it up.
1636 - Abu Sa’id ibn Yahya ibn Sa’id al-Qattan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, Sa’id ibn Abi ‘Arubah narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Thabit, from Nafi’, from Ibn ‘Umar that he said to his Umm Walad—who was either pregnant or nursing—: “You are in the position of those who are not able to bear it; you must provide food, and there is no make-up for you.” Abu Zur’ah said: The very old man, the pregnant woman, and the nursing woman feed a mudd of wheat for every day and do not make it up.
[The Second Aspect]
Those who interpreted the verse as being abrogated:
1637 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj and ‘Uthman ibn ‘Ata’, from ‘Ata’, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: ‘And upon those who are able to fast [but with hardship], a ransom [as a substitute] of feeding a poor person’—he would fast, then if he wished, he would break the fast and feed a poor person for it. Then this verse abrogated it: ‘The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it.’
