The Third Aspect:

1647 - My father narrated to us, Abu Sulayman ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Dahhak narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, who said: I said to Khulayd: "What do you think of the saying of Allah the Exalted, 'And to fast is better for you'?" He informed me on the authority of al-Hasan and Qatadah that they both said: "It used to be, 'And to fast' while under strain, until you could not bear it, 'is better for them' than the ransom, until it was abrogated by His saying: 'So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it.'"

(1). Ibn Kathir said: Abu Ma‘shar is the Imam of the Maghazi (military campaigns) and Siyar (biographies), but there is weakness in him. His son Muhammad narrated it from him and attributed it as a marfu‘ (elevated) hadith from Abu Hurayrah, and the Hafiz Ibn ‘Adi rejected it from him, and it is deserving of rejection for he is abandoned (matruk), and he was bold in elevating this hadith 1/310. (2). Musnad al-Imam Ahmad 4/107.
