His saying: "And the religion be for Allah"

1735 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "And the religion be for Allah," [meaning] and the monotheism becomes purely for Allah.

It was narrated from Abu al-‘Aliyah, Qatadah, and al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas that they said: Until he says: There is no god but Allah.

And al-Hasan and Zayd ibn Aslam said: Until Allah is not worshipped except by [the people].

[His saying: "But if they cease"]

Its explanation has preceded. Verse 192

His saying: "Then no aggression"

1736 - Al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid(1) regarding: "But if they cease, then no aggression except against the oppressors," he said: Do not fight except those who fought you.

1737 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: As for "then no aggression except against the oppressors," indeed Allah does not love aggression against the oppressors nor against others. However, He says: Transgress against them by the same [measure] as they have transgressed against you.

It was narrated from Muqatil ibn Hayyan similarly to that.

His saying: "Except against the oppressors"

1738 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Khalaf al-‘Asqalani narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja‘far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi‘, from Abu al-‘Aliyah, regarding His saying: "except against the oppressors," he means: against those who refuse to say: There is no god but Allah. It was narrated from ‘Ikrimah, Qatadah, and al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas similarly to that.

His saying: "The sacred month for the sacred month"

And by the same chain, from Abu al-‘Aliyah, regarding His saying: "The sacred month for the sacred month," he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions set out and entered into the state of ihram for ‘Umrah in Dhu al-Qa‘dah, and they had the sacrificial animals with them. When they were at al-Hudaybiyah, the polytheists blocked them. So, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made peace with them, [on the condition that] he returns, then comes back the following year, stays in Mecca for three days, and does not take with him anyone from the people of Mecca. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions slaughtered their sacrificial animals at al-Hudaybiyah and shaved or trimmed their hair. Then, when the following year came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions set out until they entered Mecca in Dhu al-Qa‘dah, performed ‘Umrah, and stayed in it for three days. The polytheists had boasted against him when they blocked him on the day of al-Hudaybiyah, so Allah avenged him against them and let him enter Mecca in that same month in which they had turned him back in Dhu al-Qa‘dah. Thus, Allah said: "The sacred month for the sacred month, and violations are subject to legal retribution."
