And it was narrated from Muqatil ibn Hayyan similarly to that.

His saying: "And fear Allah"

And by the same chain, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "And fear Allah," meaning: O believers, He warns them, so do not initiate fighting against them in the Sacred Precinct; but if the polytheists initiate it, then know that Allah is with those who fear Him.

His saying: "And know that Allah is with those who fear Him"

And by the same chain, from Sa‘id, regarding His saying: "And know that Allah is with those who fear Him," meaning: those who fear associating partners with Allah (shirk), in terms of granting them victory; He informs them that He is their Supporter.

His saying: "And spend in the cause of Allah"

1742 - Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Mansur, who said: I heard Abu Salih, the freed slave of Umm Hani, that he heard Ibn ‘Abbas saying regarding the saying of Allah: "And spend in the cause of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction," he said: Spend in the cause of Allah, even if you find nothing but a broad arrowhead.

1743 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Musayyab ibn Wadih narrated to us, Yusuf ibn Asbat narrated to us, from Sufyan, regarding His saying: "And spend in the cause of Allah," he said: In the obedience of Allah.

His saying: "And do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction"

There was a difference of opinion regarding its interpretation, one of which is:

[The first view]

What was read to Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la, Ibn Wahb reported to us, Haywah and Ibn Lahi‘ah informed me, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Aslam Abu ‘Imran, who said: We went on an expedition to Constantinople, and ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir was over the people of Egypt, and ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid ibn al-Walid was over the group. A man from among us charged at the enemy, and the people said: "Wait, wait! There is no god but Allah, he is throwing himself with his hands into destruction!" Abu Ayyub al-Ansari said: "You are interpreting this verse this way? If a man charges, seeking martyrdom or exposing himself to danger? The verse was actually revealed concerning us, the Ansar. When Allah, the Exalted, granted victory to His Prophet and manifested Islam, we said among ourselves, secretly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): We had abandoned our families and our properties to stay with him and set them in order until Allah, the Exalted, grants victory to His Messenger. Shall we [now] reside with our properties and set them in order?" So Allah sent down the news from heaven: "And spend in the cause of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction." And throwing [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction means: that we reside with our properties, setting them in order, and abandon Jihad. Abu ‘Imran said: Abu Ayyub continued to fight in the cause of Allah until he was buried in Constantinople.
